Recently, a highly scientific poll was conducted on CASKA's primary web outlets: Facebook (307 members) and Yahoo! (543 members) groups. The objective of this survey was to get a sense of CASKA members' preferences for communication within our club. Here are the results:
And the winner is … well, no clear winner emerged. In other words, it appears that CASKA members interested in reaching the maximum number of other CASKA members should cross-post their messages on both forums.
The poll was posted simultaneously on both websites. Equal numbers responded in both locations—19 on Facebook and Yahoo! The Yahoo! membership is nearly double that of the Facebook group. Yahoo! is much older, however, and more of the accounts on that forum are probably inactive. I would call the responsiveness on the two forums about even.
By absolute numbers, a slight edge goes to Facebook as the primary means of communication with other club members—16 votes as compared to 12 for Yahoo!
Needless to say, there was a preference for communicating on the same medium on which the response was given—63% of the Facebook responders preferred Facebook and 59% Yahoo! responders preferred Yahoo!
Six Facebook responders also use Yahoo! as compared to only 3 Yahoo! responders who also use Facebook. This imbalance was equalized by 4 responders on Yahoo! who indicated that they prefer Facebook (only 1 Facebook responder preferred Yahoo!). Dead even again—7 Facebook users endorsed Yahoo! and the same number the other way around.
CASKA Facebook group has been steadily growing for the past couple of years since its creation. Facebook provides an easy way to post photos, schedule and track events. Yahoo! is a tried and tested forum that has a more permanent sense to it to complement Facebook's focus on the present day. I am curious to see how the use of social media among CASKA members will evolve in the future. Please share your thoughts.
